Upcoming Products: The Ash Poopie

by Melissa on December 14, 2011

In 2009, New Zealand scientists, Robert and Brenda Vale, claimed that pets have carbon footprints larger than SUVs in their book Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living. With eco-friendly companies and products growing all the time, one company has developed a product to help reduce this carbon footprint with a product called the Ash Poopie.

The Ash Poopie is a new product developed by Paulee CleanTec, an Israeli company. Headed by award winning professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Oded Shoeyov, the mission of Paulee CleanTec is: “to better our world through cleaner, greener, cities and neighborhoods, and to the world leader in high-quality, easy-to-use, environmentally responsible consumer products for pet owners.”  According to IsraelSeen.com, the Ash Poopie was developed after an Israeli was fined for not picking up after their dog, and contacted Professor Shoseyov.

It is easy to see how the Ash Poopie idea is right in line with their mission. This high-tech pooper -scooper requires no bending over with a plastic baggie to pick up dog waste. Instead, the Ash Poopie “wand” picks up the waste. First, a cartridge must be inserted. Then, the Ash Poopie is placed over the pile, and a button is pressed to direct it to pick up the waste. The cartridge releases a capsule that turns the waste into a sterile, odorless ash, which can be deposited safely anywhere, but is recommended for use as mulch. The conversion process takes just ten seconds, and the Ash Poopie is equipped with a re-chargeable 12-volt battery, cleaning brushes, collecting shovels, and an LED light.

The Ash Poopie has patents in the United States and Europe, and the product is scheduled to be released in the United States in 2012. At SuperZoo 2011, a national expo for pet product retailers, the Ash Poopie was a hit upon its introduction. While price points are not yet known, a Huffington Post article on the product claims the cartridges could cost twenty dollars per month for a large breed dog.

This genius idea sounds like it will be a welcome addition to the world of pooper-scoopers and methods of animal clean up. The Paulee CleanTec team is currently working to develop a similar system for cats, and even humans. You can check out a video of how the Ash Poopie works here.
