Product Review:

The following review was written by Michelle from our Pet Product Review Team!

Ranger’s enjoying the canned Canine Beef Dinner Fare as part of his breakfast.  It’s important to note that Ranger NEVER finishes his food and wastes a lot, but as you can see, he went back to lick the bowl clean! Nature’s Logic canned canine food MUST be super tasty!

Product: Nature’s Logic Canned Canine (Duck & Salmon – The FAVE here).

Taste:  Both dogs (and blind kitty YooHoo) LOVED the taste of this product.  The hands down favorite was the Duck & Salmon!

Consistency: NOT watered down like a lot of premium canned foods, but a little sticky (not a problem at all, just different)

Ingredients:  Duck, Duck Broth, Poultry Liver, Salmon, Poultry Heart, Dried Egg Product, Porcine Plasma, Motmorillonite Clay, Cottage Cheese, Cod Liver Oil, Brewers Dried Yeast, Dried Apple, Dried Apricot, Alfalfa Meal, Dried Artichoke, Dried Blueberry, Dried Broccoli, Dried Carrot, Dried Chicory Root, Dried Cranberry, Dried Kelp, Parsley, Dried Pumpkin, Rosemary, Dried Spinach, Dried Tomato, Egg Shell Meal.

Ingredient Issues/Comments:

1. My first reaction was to the Porcine Plasma and WHY it was used in this product.  I easily found my answer on the Nature’s Logic website. More importantly, I was reminded of the fact that our pets (animals) have vastly different needs than our own, and if it makes “me” say “Ewww”, it is most likely very yummy to my furry family.  You can see the details of why Porcine Plasma was included here: http://www.natureslogic.com/faq/#faq1  I can’t argue!

2. Brewer’s Yeast. Really?  I’m not completely “sold” on this one yet as I fear it may induce allergies in our sensitive pets, but I have to say that without further research, I find it hard to argue with their reasoning. You can find it here: http://www.natureslogic.com/faq/#faq4

3. I challenge ALL of you to take this ingredient list, and compare it to what you are currently feeding your pet.  I completely admit that I’m a total pet food snob, and that is where my own questions and ever so slight reservations come from… but what about YOUR pet food???  I’ll bet that a lot of you will see RICE, CORN, GLUTEN, BY PRODUCTS, and a host of other weird things, right?  How nutritious does THAT sound?  The answer is that it doesn’t sound nutritious at all because it isn’t… for ANY living being!

Feeding Issues:

1. Labelled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.  I have to be honest in saying that when I first read this statement, I was sorry that I accepted this product for testing as my former puppy mill Pom gains a great deal of her moisture and nutrients through canned food.  This is where we ALL need to put on our thinking caps!  Nature’s Logic thoroughly addresses this issue in detail, but we should all remain aware, and ask the questions (if any) that aren’t being answered in our own minds.  http://www.natureslogic.com/faq/#faq7

What’s different about this food?  LOTS!!

1. Nature’s Logic is HIGH in valuable MEAT! If you don’t already know how to compare protein content (dry matter Vs. wet), you actually have to do a calculation, and Nature’s Logic ROCKS in this category!

2. Did you see any artificially synthesized vitamins listed? NOPE! There aren’t any, and that’s the reason for some of the odder ingredients.  This is super new to even ME, and I’m so ashamed that I didn’t think about it before. WHAT, exactly, are those massive amounts of synthesized vitamins doing to our pets?  The truth is, nobody knows!!!  Nature’s Logic is fully aware of this, and you can read about it here: http://www.natureslogic.com/faq/#faq8  Isn’t this a NO BRAINER?? Seriously, you want your babies, toddlers, and children to gain as much of their nutrients as possible from natural choices, right? RIGHT! The same is true for our beloved pets!

Bottom Line:  Being the pet food snob that I am, it’s super important to me to learn about the source of the ingredients that make up my pet’s food. I’m hoping to add an update to this very soon!  In the interim, I can’t help but give this (canned) food top paws! Was it 4, or was it 5??? UGGH!!  Right now, Nature’s Logic is right up there for top honors with one other that I’d like to compare it to. Nature’s Logic has literally set a new standard in pet food, and the BEST part is… my pets LOVE it!

We’ll definitely be looking into the dry formula for Ranger, as well as the canned formulas for our cats! YooHoo, our blind kitty, decided to participate in the taste test by munching away before Ranger was called to his meal. We had just fed YooHoo, but the yummy smell caught his attention too.

Blue Buffalo Coupons Giveaway!

by Kristy on April 12, 2011

Just a hint that you might want to head over to the My Pet Saving’s Facebook Page, I am giving away 2 Blue Buffalo dog and cat food coupons, HURRY ends at 8PM PST!

Fetch. Pounce. Win!

First Impressions:

Kristy: On first look the packaging looks very clean and modern. Canine Caviar is unique in the way that it is a Holistic raw meat diet in kibble form. They have grain-free formulas available for sensitive pets. All of their formulas contain no corn, no wheat, no soy, and no chemical preservatives. I also found it very interesting that their kibble is only cooked for 6 seconds, without any added GMO.

Lindsay: The packaging was very attractive and the buffalo stix were a great size! I sometimes think that, when I am buying bully sticks, I really don’t get much “bang for my buck” but these were downright large! The Beaver had me interested because I have never heard of using beaver as an alternative protein source before. The instructions said to “shake the can” which made me wonder if it was going to smell strangely or be super oily.

Product Review:

My cat Eve was the product tester for the following Canine Caviar Cat Products:

Holistic Chicken with Pink Salmon Kibble: Eve really loves chicken, so it was no surprise to me that she gobbled this down right away. I appreciated that it was Holistic and made from free range, antibiotic, hormone and pesticide-free USDA chicken.

Holistic Gourmet Turkey: Eve always licks up the juices in canned food before eating the rest of it, and this was no different. Except this time she didn’t leave any remaining food, she loved it! The can was quite large and lasted her a few small meals.

Lindsay’s Dog Abigail was the product tester for the following Canine Caviar Dog Products:

Venison and Split Pea Kibble- Abby and I both appreciate that the venison is pastured and that the food is free of GMOs. We try to stay as eco-friendly as possible! She thought the Venison and Split Pea was tasty as well…we even used some as training “treats” and she was willing to “perform” all her tricks to get some more. Venison is also a new-ish protein source in the pet food industry and I could see this being a positive for dogs that are sensitive to the normal chicken and beef products.

Gourmet Beaver Canned Food- It didn’t have any sort of strange odor and was extremely palatable. I could see this being a good food for dogs that have a hard time maintaining body weight and live a very active life style. Abby thought it was extremely tasty-and she only got a small amount as an extra special taste test treat! I would be cautious feeding this to any dog that gains weight quickly or is older and spayed or neutered (read: obese prone)

Reviewer Note: While Abby would readily eat both of these-and enjoy them-my only caveat with Canine Caviar’s line of food products is that they are formulated to meet AAFCO Nutrient Profiles and haven’t actually under gone an AAFCO feeding trial. I am very supportive of pet food companies that are making a go with holistic values and eco friendly components (we all need to make that effort!) but I feel more secure feeding a diet that I know has been AAFCO tested.

Buffalo Stix- You will see in the pictures, Abby looked almost confused when she first got her Buffalo Stix treat. As if she couldn’t believe it was actually for her! For being such a tiny pooch, that little girl can put a hurting on some chews (which, incidentally, tends to put a hurting on my wallet). The Buffalo Stix treat was amazing, keeping her chewing for almost an hour! These are definitely something that we will be looking for in the future-I like that they are long lasting and natural and Abigail just plain loves them!

Final Paw Ratings:

Eve’s Ratings:

Holistic Chicken with Pink Salmon Kibble-5/5 Paws
Holistic Gourmet Turkey- 5/5 Paws

Abigail’s ratings:

Holistic Gourmet Beaver- 3/5 Paws
Holistic Venison and Split Pea Kibble- 3/5 Paws
Free Range Grass Fed Buffalo Stix- 5/5 Paws

What You Can Win!:

(1) Cat owner will win one of each of the products that Eve tested out: Chicken with Pink Salmon Kibble and Gourmet Turkey Canned Food.

(1) Dog owner will win one of each of the products that Abigail tested out: Venison and Split Pea Kibble, Gourmet Beaver Canned Food, Buffalo Stix Dog Treats.
