Introducing your new baby to your pet is a wonderful way to establish a bond between them, but to your pet it can be a difficult idea for them to get used to, especially if they were your “first” baby. At MyPetSavings, we are here to help you with some tips you can use to make the transition smooth for both you and your pet!
- Sprinkle baby powder, oil, or other baby products that you will be using on your body to prepare your pet for new smells they will encounter.
- Encourage friends with babies and infants to visit often to accustom your pet to babies and smaller children.
- Train your pet to sit next to you or calmly beside your feet to prepare when you are holding the baby. Praise your pet with lots of treats to reward them for their good behavior.
If you’re still worried that your dog may be aggressive or fearful of your newborn, take them to obedience or training classes to calm them down and get used to the idea of a baby in your house. Once they get used to the new baby, you can watch their relationship blossom and become the best of friends for years to come.

Congratulations! You’ve got a new kitten and you’re ready to take him home. Whether you adopted your cat or bought them from a breeder, you’re in for a real treat. While you’re squealing over your new bundle of joy, there are a couple of things to consider when getting your house ready for a new kitty. At My Pet Savings, we have some tips to make a smooth transition for your cat!
- Provide a comfortable, quiet area away from household traffic with a cardboard box lined with sheets or a nice cat bed to create a safe place for your new kitten to feel secure and warm.
- Provide a scratching post for your kitten to use to prevent clawing of your furniture.
- “Kitten proof” your home by anchoring drape or blind cords and closing the washing and drying machines as your cat may snuggle in there for a warm nap.
- If your kitten meows or is stressed out because he misses his mother, pick him up and talk to him in a soothing voice to ease the stress. Wrapping a ticking clock around a blanket and placing it by his bed can also ease the stress as it will remind him of his mother’s heartbeat.
- Have lots of fun!
