Pet Facts 101: Horses

by Kiara on October 29, 2012

The first horses were domesticated in Asia around 4,000 years ago and since then, have been used for a variety of different things such as transportation, pulling heavy loads and also therapy. At MyPetSavings.com, we value the contribution that horses have made in different societies across the world. Here are some interesting facts we have found!

-An adult female is called a mare, and a young female is called a filly. An adult male is a stallion, and a young male is a colt. An unweaned baby of either sex is a foal.
-Horses have an advanced sense of taste which allows the horse to sort through grasses and grains to find the things that the horse would most like to eat.
-Foals and can walk and run within 25 minutes of being born.
-A horse typically sleeps two and half to three hours a day
-No two horses are identical

Although it does take a lot of hard work and space, having a horse as a pet can be a very rewarding experience. As horses can live up to 45 years, the bond between a human and a horse can be very strong.

Happy Pet Learning!
